Social Transformation of Katowice
The Social Transformation of Katowice project addresses the process of transforming a mining region into a sustainable green economy, which engages local communities, promotes education and provides support for residents to adapt to change, while addressing the needs of marginalised groups.
The project is implemented by the MOST Association in partnership with the City of Katowice in the period 01.01.2024-30.09.2025 and is aimed at 300 residents of Katowice.
Project co-financed by the European Union within the framework of the European Funds for Silesia 2021-2027 Measure 10.24 Social inclusion - Strengthening equitable transformation.
The value of project co-financing is PLN 823,575.00, including EU funding of PLN 741,217.50.
Project Objective:
The main objective of the project is to take action for the inhabitants of Katowice participating in a just transition, to develop their social activism and to prepare them to accept climate and transformational change. The project, which runs from 01.01.2024 to 30.09.2025, aims to address the problems of non-acceptance of change, low social activity, especially among women, youth and the elderly, and social groups most vulnerable to the effects of transformation. Activities will include environmental education, competence development, social animation and support for the green economy, especially in the area of the city of Katowice, which is part of the transformation region.
Target group:
The target group consists of people who live, study or work in the city of Katowice and face social problems. The main audiences are people exposed to the negative effects of the transformation, i.e.: young people (15-29 years), women, senior citizens (60+), as well as residents who are actively involved in community activities.
Planned activities:
- Public acceptance of the transformation process - The project aims to improve the quality of life and activate the inhabitants of Katowice in activities that support the transformation process. CITY OF KATOWICE
- Social Transformation Forum - organisation by the CITY OF KATOWICE of meetings to raise awareness and demonstrate the need for change resulting from the energy transition and climate change.
- Social animation for the climate transformation process using local potential - As part of the measure, an animation programme for young people and senior citizens will be carried out to stimulate social activity. There will also be regular meetings to reinforce the programme's activities, involvement in the environmental projects of Katowice-based NGOs and the realisation of own ideas, including activities concerning the maintenance of traditions and identity.
- Education for change - to hold two editions of the School of Environmental Educators, in which educational activities will be undertaken to broaden the participants' knowledge and strengthen their awareness of the transformation processes.
- Local initiatives - implementation of 10 grassroots initiatives involving the local community and harnessing its potential, with the aim of generating positive change in the local environment.
- Strengthening the capacity of third sector transformation actors - support and development of the Applicant's NGO working for a just transition in the region.
- Study visits (School of Environmental Educators) - It is envisaged to organise two off-site training courses in the form of study visits within the framework of the School of Environmental Educators.
- Women's Club - A Women's Activity Club will be set up to support women through activities raising knowledge and awareness of diversity management and through the development of women's managerial competences.
- Investment in infrastructure - It is envisaged that the premises, borrowed from the City of Katowice (partner) and available to the MOST Association, will be modernised in order to improve the energy efficiency of the building and reduce the energy consumption in which the project will be carried out.
