Children and young people for the environment
In recent weeks, pupils at a school in Katowice took part in a unique grassroots initiative called. „A Green Future for Young People – Together for the Environment and Our Class!”. The main aim of the initiative was encouraging children and young people to get involved by engaging them in practical activities to protect the environment.
The initiative brought together environmental education combined with social integration and creative play. As part of the project, a number of activities were carried out to raise participants’ environmental awareness and encourage them to take their own actions to protect nature.
Education, the environment and inclusion – implementation of the initiative
- Gardening workshops – planting plants
The pupils learnt the basics of plant care and worked together to create a school garden. Planting the plants provided an opportunity to discuss biodiversity and the impact of green spaces on quality of life. - Eco-sewing – craft workshops
The children made these themselves eco-friendly cushions made from recycled materials. The activities promoted the idea of reusing items and helped develop manual skills. - Art workshop: „Let’s Save Endangered Species”
The participants created artworks on the theme of endangered and extinct animal species, whilst learning about nature conservation and humanity’s responsibility for the planet’s future. - „Composting with Style” – learning by doing
A garden has been created in the school grounds compost bin. The pupils learnt what bio-waste is, what can be composted, and why composting is important for the environment. - Water protection and the construction of water filters
The children were building simple water filters made from natural materials, by learning how water treatment works and how to protect water resources in everyday life. - Eco-friendly picnic – project finale
To round off the event, there was an eco-friendly picnic in the school garden. It was a time for socialising, creative fun and workshops on restoring and altering clothes.
