We are delighted to report on yet another grassroots initiative taking place in Katowice – „Green Up, Katowice!”, the aim of which was to promote attitudes environmentally friendly, raising awareness of environmental protection and integration of the local community on topics related to environmental protection and sustainable development.
The project was carried out in two stages, involving the residents of Katowice – both young and old – in working together for the good of our planet.
Stage I: Educational session
The first stage of the initiative took place 25 July and was characterised by workshop and discussion sessions. Its main aim was to lay the groundwork for the eco-festival, as well as to engage participants in a dialogue about ecology and encourage them to adopt a more conscious approach to environmental protection. As part of this stage, a variety of activities took place, combining theory with practice:
- The debate on the environment – It was an excellent opportunity to discuss the environmental challenges we face as a society. Participants had the chance to exchange views and learn about different perspectives on nature conservation.
- „EkoFashion” workshops” – creative workshops during which participants learnt how to upcycle and transform old clothes into unique outfits, applying the principles of sustainable fashion.
- Workshop: „Upcycling: giving things a new lease of life” – a hands-on session that explained the principles of the zero-waste philosophy in an accessible way. Participants learnt how to reuse items, giving them a new lease of life.
- Eco-friendly Kahoot! – an interactive quiz which tested participants’ knowledge of ecology and the natural world in an engaging way. Learning through play was very well received.
Stage II: Eco-Festival
The highlight of the initiative was an environmental festival in Katowice’s Three Ponds Park, which took place 17 August. The event was open to the public and attracted a large number of participants of all ages – children, young people, adults and senior citizens. The programme included both educational and entertainment activities:
- The „Ekomemy” Competition” – a modern way of engaging young people in environmental education. Participants created their own memes (graphics, photos or texts of a humorous or ironic nature), addressing topics related to recycling, environmental protection and climate change in an accessible way.
- „Eko Fortuna’s Wheel” – a game that combined knowledge of ecology with good fun. Participants answered questions about the environment and won interesting prizes.
- IQwood wooden games – eco-friendly entertainment for the whole family. The wooden puzzles encouraged logical thinking and creativity, whilst also serving as a great example of a sustainable toy.
- „Sort like a PRO” – an interactive educational stand teaching the principles of proper waste sorting. Through play, children and adults were able to consolidate their knowledge of waste management.
The festival was accompanied by additional attractions – music from a DJ, a relaxation area, eco-friendly gadgets, and a space for chatting and spending time together in the spirit of environmental responsibility.
